Wanted to write a post about travelling on trains in Russia and found that amazing post from Cody, guy who “touched Russia”. It is real true that travelling on trains in Russia is a kind of ritual that everyone must try!

In this shot I am on the train, on my way from Moscow to St. Petersburg.

Taking a train in Russia is something that everyone must try at least once in their life. There is, of course, a little distinction to make. I am not talking about one of those shiny super-fast new trains that connect Moscow to St. Peterburg in less than three hours. No, you can get those pretty much anywhere. I am talking about old style trains, which are extremely efficient and punctual as they probably where in Soviet times.

I recommend you a train journey in Russia for its social value. Trains are relatively cheap, even if you opt for a kupé (4 bed compartment). I personally prefer platzkarts, which are big open carriages with seats that convert in beds and can house more than 20 people at a time. If you are travelling on a platzkart, make sure to book an overnight journey, because this is the best way to experience it to the fullest. You will share the compartment with people you didn’t know until a few minutes before, and you will probably end up spending a memorable night with them. This is Russia at its best. People will ask you lots of questions, and in return you will be treated to the best Russian hospitality. Russians on a train are most likely to share their food and drinks with you, and will probably toast to your zdorovye (health) by the end of the evening.

You will wake up aching after a very few hours of sleep on the slightly uncomfortable converted beds, but, hell yeah, you will have had the time of your life!
